Visiting Atlantic Canada

Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island – it’s all-good in winter. Canada’s Atlantic Provinces fill with the sights and sounds of Canada’s winter season. Halifax hosts the “In the Dead of Winter Music Festival”, Halifax Regional Municipality offers ice skating at the Oval in the Halifax North Common, or take it indoors for a Performance at Neptune Theatre. As they say – Sparkle & Shine: Enjoy Winter Delights in Halifax. At the centre of Atlantic Canada, Greater Moncton is New Brunswick’s largest metro area. Anchoring the eastern end of the Funday Coast Moncton is ideal to launch your exploration of this Marine Wonder of the World.

After a festive holiday season at St Andrews By-the-Sea’s Winter Festival Season of Light and Wonder, the New Year gets going in New Brunswick with Snow Blast in Florenceville-Bristol, Ice Carnival in Shippagan and Winterfesthiver in Fredericton.

Nothing beats the winter blues like a good laugh. Come February, Moncton is the place to be for the 2012 Hubcap Comedy Festival. The 12th annual festival is February 7th through the 11th at venues throughout Moncton. “Die Laughing “ at the 2012 Hubcap Comedy Festival at the Capitol Theatre, Moncton High School and Coverdale Centre among the venues. Presented by Westjet, get tickets early and enter to win airline tickets.

Yarmouth on Nova Scotia’s Acadian Coast is officially 250 years old after 2011’s year full of celebrations. Boasting the warmest winter temperatures in Atlantic Canada, Yarmouth and the Acadian Shores region of Nova Scotia are by all definitions cold. Famous for the 75 foot tall Cape Forchu Lightstation, the first applecore style lighthouse, the Yarmouth area makes a great destination to explore. Although the Cape Forchu lighthouse is closed for the winter, it is worth the 10 minute drive to see the picture perfect setting.

Winter in Nova Scotia is ideal for snowshoeing in Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site. Enjoy winter’s scenery with a Sleigh Ride along the trails of Ross Farm Museum or trace your history at the Thomas Raddall Research Library at Liverpool’s Queens County Museum. Southern Nova Scotia offers spectacular birding in late February and March.

Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada’s largest metropolitan area, is a fun destination year round. Winter brings events like La La La Human Steps at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium. Halifax’s Live Art Dance hosts Atlantic Canada’s 2012 premier of La La La Human Steps accompanied by an onstage quartet, February 11th. Enjoy a spectacular evening of dance in Halifax.

Casino Nova Scotia hosts the Fourth Annual Rare and Fine Wine Tasting February 17th. This is a must attend event for wine enthusiasts in Halifax, featuring over 30 highly rated wines in the tasting. Come hone your wine tasting skills and vocabulary and take home your favourites.
