Festivals in Atlantic Canada

Have a Blast at These Festivals, from New Brunswick to Nova Scotia

Whether it's the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, the HubCap Comedy Festival in Moncton, or the Big Red Music Festival out on Prince Edward Island, you'll find an impressive array of festivals to check out on your next visit to Atlantic Canada.

Across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, enjoy local accommodations as you seek the best in annual Atlantic Canada Festivals

In Nova Scotia, you can visit a city like Truro, home to the annual Dutch Mason Blues Festival which is held in early August, or head west along the Bay of Fundy and check out Kingston, home of the annual Kingston Steer BBQ and Village Fair – usually held the second weekend in July.

In Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, enjoy your fall visit with a trip to the Halifax Pop Explosion. Held annually, two weeks after Thanksgiving, the Halifax Pop Explosion was founded in 1993 and originally sought to promote the Canadian grunge music scene.

After the 1999 festival, it ceased to operate until it was brought back to life in 2001, with a broader scope of music, thus doubling in average attendance. Many music lovers from Bridgewater and Liverpool often make trips into Halifax for the festival.

In early July, experience eight days of top jazz music at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival. With performances at venues all around Halifax – The Pavilion, The Company House, Alliance Francaise – you'll find a wide range of jazz bands performing.

Past performers include Erin Costelo, Dr. John & the Nite Trippers, and A Tribe Called Red. The TD Halifax Jazz Festival is an ideal summer destination for any jazz fan

Head for the western coast of Nova Scotia and play a visit to Yarmouth. When you visit during the summer, be sure to check out Yarmouth Seafest, an annual event dubbed, "A Celebration of Life by the Sea."

A 10-day celebration, the fun kicks off, usually, mid-July, and features events like Children's Boat Building, and the Sheila Poole 10K Race. Be sure to visit the Cape Forchu Lightstation

In Digby, north along the Evangeline Trail, you'll want to experience the Wharf Rat Rally. A popular motorcycle rally held in late August by the Wharf Rat Rally Motorcycle Association, the Wharf Rat Rally features live music, parades, rides, stunts and competitions like Best Chopper, Best Custom, and Best Cruiser.

Across the Bay of Fundy, head for New Brunswick and check out cities like Grand Falls, Edmundston, or Saint John. When you visit Moncton, you can split your sides at the annual HubCap Comedy Festival, held at the end of January through early February at various local venues. When you visit the area in late August, head for downtown Saint John and check out the Saint John Exhibition. A five-day festival, Saint John Exhibition features classic fair and carnival rides and attractions.

In downtown Fredericton, experience even more live jazz at the annual Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival – ever-present as a hub for top tour and local jazz acts. Drive east from Woodstock in early September and experience the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, established in 1991. Early August in Fredericton means it's time to rock – head for the Fredericton Loyalists Rugby Grounds for the annual FredRock Festival

Another popular festival in Woodstock is the Dooryard Arts Festival. Any early August visit should yield time spent at the four-day Dooryard Arts Festival – music, paintings, photography and plenty more art await.

Along the northern ridge of New Brunswick, tucked away just at the western end of Chaleur Bay, Campbellton is another charming city well worth a visit. Traditionally held in late June through the first week of July, the Campbellton Salmon Festival celebrates the local fishing industry and its main catch, the Restigouche salmon. Make the trip from nearby Dalhousie.

Events at the Campbellton Salmon Festival include fireworks displays on Canada Day, a Parking Lot Party with live music, the Campbellton Amusements Carnival, and plenty of food vendors who utilize salmon in their own, unique way.

On Prince Edward Island, make a travel plan to visit Charlottetown. The largest city on PEI, Charlottetown hosts the annual Big Red Music Festival – usually held the last weekend in June. Plan your visit to the Charlottetown Event Grounds on your summer stay and check out the live music – past performances include Metric, Great Big Sea, and Ludacris.
